Youtube made me buy it

…but was it worth it?

I am certain any beauty lover knows this kind of situation. Even though we all like to believe we are rational decisionmakers, it does not help one bit to read blogs, watch YouTube videos. Reading about one product one too many times and there you go, the often calculated praises need to be tested by yourself. And you bought something you really just had to have!

These are an example of purchases I am sure of “discovering” through their persistent presence in posts and videos!

What happened to these products? Did they survive the hype?

LORAC PRO PALETTE

I honestly cannot recall which video pushed me over the edge to buy this palette. A few years ago there was just no bypassing this declared must have: Almost innovative with a full row of matte and a row of shimmer shadows with much more interesting shades than the ever popular Urban Decay NAKED palettes! I received it through a US trade parcel and years later I can say it’s still one of my favourite palettes.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation

BOURJOIS HEALTHY MIX SERUM FOUNDATION

The ever popular Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation I definitely got after Lisa Eldridge, one of the few serious MUAs on YouTube I am following for their experience and clean presentation, would not shut up about it. She kept praising it as a high end product in a drug store bottle and what I can say, this is probably the second or third bottle.

Colourpop Eyeshadows

COLOURPOP

Ah, Colourpop. THE brand of 2016. You just couldn’t avoid the white pots, even when I barely had time to read blog posts anymore I felt the pull of all the glorious pr samples. So I ordered. And yes, the eyeshadows are lovely, the texture very interesting indeed…but I must confess I am more likely to use the Lippie Stix (dat name tho) than the shadows. Even the highlighter found its way into my drawer. The one shadow I use most is honestly the most boring one of my order “hanky panky” – easily applied with just fingers, mascara and you’re good to go! So…do I regret it? Mhh, the delivery was easier than expected, but…

REVLON JUST BITTEN KISSABLE BALM STAIN HONEY

Another product where I can distinctly remember watching a video, this time by Leighann. Back in the day when chubby lipsticks used to be super chic. Revlon introduced their take on chubbies, with good pigment and longevity on the lips. Honey must be the most popular shade  and it is still a great “out of the door” candidate for me.

Sonia Kashuk Large Crease Brush

WET'N WILD COMFORT ZONE

Hands up who doesn’t know this palette! Next to some of the more neutral trios the Comfort Zone palette surely is among Wet’n wild’s bestsellers. Mostly due to the then unusal duochrome shade. For a very budget friendly price. Looking at it rationally now, importing it from the US definitely wasn’t necessary – even that duochrome shadow has made appearances in many other brands’ ranges.

SONIA KASHUK LARGE CREASE BRUSH

Another one of the products where I definitely remember who made me buy it. This Sonia Kashuk brush I owe to Tina, a YouTuber who deserves more subscribers in my humble opinion. Her looks are always precise, mostly colourful but sometimes neutral but you will see this brush in many of her tutorials. So, it must be the secret, right? It can’t just be her skill to blend effortlessly…but I have to admit this brush is very special, the short, round cut is not too stiff not too soft. Great brush!

REVLON LIP BUTTER MACAROON

Can you remember the hype? The intense buzz around the Revlon Lip Butter? As if they reinvented the wheel! Yes I did fall for it as well and bought a few shades. Macaroon used to only be available in the US = magnet effect. I think it was Emily who gushed about it a lot. In the end, these lip butters are rather soft lipsticks with varying pigmentation – Macaroon is a fairly ordinary pink with golden flecks in it. It’s not special in my more…mature eyes at all. I am still using it but wouldn’t repurchase.

SOAP & GLORY HIGHLIGHTER

Highlighter are the new Colourpop. More more more! Nowadays people don’t even back away from the ever dreaded glitter. But before just about every make up line on the planet had at least a few highlighters in their range Soap & Glory’s version got high praises from many, I especially remember Fleur. I got it in a gift set and as you can see, I barely used it. Looking at it from 2013 it is a decent highlighter. From today’s standpoint: Meh.

GOSH VELVET TOUCH LIPSTICK ANTIQUE

If there’s one product which is absolutely worth running out and getting (like I did) it’s this lipstick. The shade Antique by GOSH is a dream, the matte finish of the GOSH lipsticks are like no other: Velvety and longlasting. It was Viola, who showed it off on Instagram – resulting in me getting three shades of the Velvet Touch lipsticks, so far.

MAX FACTOR NAIL POLISH FANTASY FIRE

Max Factor Fantasy Fire

Way before nailblogging was a thing for instagram I saw this beauty on quite a few blogs. What a bomb! The changing effect shows off best on a dark base like black or purple. It’s such a shame it’s not in Max Factor’s regular product range on the continent!

REAL TECHNIQUES FACE EXPERT BRUSH

This brush came into my possession due to the excellent self-advertising of Pixiwoo. I remember how fascinated I was watching them apply foundation with this new brush and how it looked seemingly more covering and flawless. I finally managed to find it in the smaller Boots on Oxford Streed but to be perfectly honest the experience with it was a bit disappointing. The buffere is nice, firm, don’t get me wrong, but…it definitely depends on the foundation with me, the result can turn out quite streaky making the blending anything but effortless. Not a must have at all.

WHAT I LEARNED

YouTube made me buy it

In the course of the last year my priorities moved from blogging to work and many other interests. I’ve been reading less and less blogs and honestly been buying less and less. The more you emerge yourself into a subject the more bonding you feel …and with this hobby sometimes a slight shopping issue.

Due to shuffling up my life priorities I also changed my shopping habits, even though I barely made it to the high street every week before that. My best advice is to make a note of these “must haves”, be it in a physical notebook or Pinterest and wait. I have been saving lots of money as some products’ attractiveness just seems to wear off after two months  – if you still love it, however, go for it! It makes a purchase even sweeter.

Apropos

Decluttering. As mentioned I have barely been buying anything at all. The less you buy the larger your collection feels! Contradictory but true… Therefore, I have been decluttering quite a bit. Next to boxes of thrown away stuff (mostly old products), I was left with a large box of “too good to throw out”. In case you are interested, please read up here or message me at [email protected].

My First Copperware Party und Co begleiten mich fast täglich.
