So, you might have heard of the Benefit they’re real! Push up liner. …And of course I am interested in it as well – if you were to judge by the amount of coverage it got, it basically is an eyeliner revelation! How could I NOT be interested.
Especially regarding the fact that the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara positively surprised me, I expected magically-amazing results from this gel eyeliner pen.
Since Benefit recently offered to exchange any old eyeliner with a premium sample size of their Push Up Liner, ‘I got my hands on one to try. Good thing I was clearing out my collection of dried up eyeliners anyway.
This “premium sized” sample looks rather cute I must say, Which might be due to its teeny-weeny-ness. It really is tiny. I dropped it twice when using it for te first time. This obviously only goes for the sample, the fullsize is a nice standard sized pen.
I am going to ignore all the crazy claims about lashhugging and making the eyes bigger – from experience I can tell you: Any well applied eyeliner makes the eyes look bigger/more defined. Sorry to burst any bubbles here!
The applicator is the same in the sample as the fullsize though: A flexible, slim rubber tip that doses the product.
The opening is very narrow indeed and feels very soft and nice along the lashline – basically really good. If it wasn’t for the actual product.
Yes, I do realise it all comes down to how much product is on the applicator. You have to manually squeeze out the product of the sample size here. But really: It is really rather dry. The actual gel crumbs immediately as soon as you got the tiniest bit too much coming out of the opening. I don’t think it is especially smooth; rather hard to handle. If you don’t manage to get the precisest amount of a “one-swipe-liner” across the lid, you have to go back and correct it.
Which really does not do it any good. Since the eyeliner gel is pretty paste-like already, it dries down instantly and if you want to go over it again, to correct or deepen the black, things can get crumbly, flaking off liner you already put down. I’m gonna leave it at that as eyeliner products that do that are pretty much dead to me at that point…

I find the edges pretty jagged for a gel, it looks bumpy, not really what I am going for with my eyeliner. Yes, even though barely anyone gets so close to my eyes. Apart from you guys, obviously.
As a reminder: I have been using and applying all sorts of eyeliner for about 15 years now. This is how it looks with my usual choice of Maybelline Gel Eyeliner in black:
That liner is actually opaque with the first application, smooth and clean edges.

I am actually pretty disappointed, I must admit. That many good reviews, that much hype – which must all be due to the really nice, new applicator tip I assume. The product itself I can credit with excellent longevity. Application, smoothness…there’s room for improvement in my opinion.
Well, maybe it’s all due to my tiny sample? Who knows…
Concluding a look at the ingredients. Which honestly spoiled any desire to try the fullsize pen for me, if I am honest.

I am glad I got this mini sample. It is enough to try and test the product and to render a verdict: We won’t get along. The new applicator I really like, the longevity is pretty impressive as well, the product itself is too dry for my liking – even for a person like me with years and years of eyeliner-application-experience. I can imagine beginners could end up being very frustrated with the push up liner since it gives you the best result when you are able to apply it in one swipe.
Yesyes, I know, the fullsize pen comes with a fancy twist up mechanism, and it works muuuch better that way.
I still don’t see how everyone and their mother are that head over heels for it. New applicator? Yes, it’s nice. But the rest…you know, every other gel eyeliner usually lasts all day as well. OMG!
A look into the ingredients puts the icing on the cake for me – quite a lot in total and many of them rated as not recommended in such a small sized product. Probably best for everyone you only get a tiny 1.4g (fullsize!) for about £19…too bad really, since I was open minded about it and almost expecting it to be just as surprisingly good as the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara!

Der they’re real! push-up liner macht es verboten einfach einen perfekten Lidstrich zu ziehen: Er schmiegt sich an den Wimpernkranz an, denn je näher der Lidstrich am Wimpernkranz sitzt, desto größer wirkt das Auge!
Niemand entkommt dem Hype.

Vom Benefit they’re real! Push up liner habt ihr also vielleicht schon gehört. …Und natürlich interessierte es mich auch – wenn man nach der Masse an Berichterstattung geht, ist er eine absolute Eyeliner Offenbarung! Wie könnte ich da nicht auch interessiert sein.
Besonders, da mich die Benefit They’re Real! Mascara sehr positiv überrascht hat, erwartete ich ja fast magisch-tolle Ergebnisse von diesem Gel Eyeliner im Stift.
Durch eine Aktion von Benefit konnte man an den Countern einen alten Eyeliner gegen eine “Luxusprobe” des neuen Push up liners tauschen. Gut, dass ich ohnehin einen ausgetrockneten Liner wegschmeißen wollte.
Die Luxusgröße fällt vor allem durch die niedliche Verpackung auf. Wahrscheinlich so niedlich, weil winzig klein. Wirklich winzig, der Liner fiel mir beim ersten Probieren zweimal aus den Fingern. Aber das alles gilt natürlich nur für die Probe, die Fullsize ist handlicher in Stiftform.
Die “Anschmiegen” und “lässt das Auge größer wirken” Versprechen werde ich hier mal galant ignorieren – aus Erfahrung kann ich euch sagen: Jeder gut aufgetragene Lidstrich lässt das Auge größer/definierter wirken. Sorry, für etwaiges Seifenblasenplatzenlassen!
Der Applikator ist auch bei der Probe der gleiche: Eine flexible, schmale Gummispitze, aus der das Produkt dosiert wird.
Die Öffnung ist in der Tat sehr schmal und fühlt sich angenehm am Wimpernkranz an – grundsätzlich also wirklich gut. Wenn da nicht das eigentliche Produkt wäre.
Ja, ich weiß, oft hängt es damit zusammen, wenn zu viel Produkt am Applikator hängt usw. Bei der Probe muss man es sanft herausdrücken. Aber ehrlich: Es ist mir viel zu trocken. Das eigentliche Gel bröckelt sofort, wenn auch nur die winzigste Kleinigkeit zu viel herauskommt. Ich finde es nicht besonders geschmeidig und relativ schwierig zu handhaben – wenn man nicht genau die richtige Menge für einen Zug über das komplette Lid erwischt, muss man nochmal drüber gehen.
Was es nicht wirklich besser macht. Das Gel ist ohnehin pastig, trocknet also sehr schnell, wenn man mit der Gummispitze also nochmal darüberziehen wollte, bröckelt gerne mal schon platzierter Liner ab. Ich lass das jetzt mal so stehen, denn für mich ist ein Eyeliner da eh schon gestorben…
Man sieht diese Krümel hier auf dem Auftragsbild sehr gut – über das ganze Lid verteilt:

Zur Erinnerung: Ich trage seit ca. 15 Jahren Eyeliner. Mit meinem normalen Maybelline Gel Eyeliner sieht das eigentlich so aus:
Der Liner ist deckend, geschmeidig, glatte Ränder. Was man da an “Goldstaub” sieht, ist etwas Fallout.

Ich bin eigentlich recht enttäuscht, muss ich sagen. So viele gute Reviews, so viel Hype – das muss alles vom wirklich guten Applikator herrühren. Dem Produkt selbst kann ich nur sehr gute Haltbarkeit zuschreiben. Auftrag, Geschmeidigkeit…verbesserungswürdig in meinen Augen.
Oder liegt alles nur an meiner mini Luxusprobe? Wer weiß…

Ich bin froh, diese Mini-Probe zu haben. Reicht für einen Test und ich sehe schon: Das wird nix mit uns. Der neue Applikator ist wirklich gut, die Haltbarkeit auch, das Produkt selbst empfinde ich als zu trocken – selbst für eine geübte Eyeliner-in wie mich! Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass sich Anfänger sehr ärgern würden, da man nur mit präzisem Auftrag, am besten in einem Zug, ein komplett sauberes Ergebnis bekommt.
Jaja, ich weiß, dass der Fullsize Stift einen Twistup Mechanismus hat, und das dann vieeel einfacher geht.
Ich seh trotzdem nicht, warum alle Welt + Mütter derart begeistert sind. Neuer Applikator? Ok, der ist gut. Aber sonst…wisst ihr, jeder andere Gel Eyeliner hält auch den ganzen Tag. Boah!
Die Incis sind das Tüpfelchen auf dem i – so viele und vor allem nicht empfehlenswerte Stoffe in so einem kleinen Produkt? Eigentlich schon wieder gut, dass man nur 1,4g (fullsize!) für 25€ bekommt…Schade, ich war durchaus aufgeschlossen, positiv überrascht zu werden, was ja die Benefit They’re Real! Mascara schon geschafft hat!
